Fluid Fraud
Protect the payment. Keep the customer.
Every checkout is screened by Fluid Payments before the card is charged. Clear orders go through, bad ones stop before any money moves, and uncertain ones wait for your team, with the evidence right on the order.
Screening
Every checkout is screened before the card is charged.
Fluid Payments scores each order before payment. Most go straight through, clearly bad ones stop before a charge is attempted, and uncertain ones are held for your team.
- Three outcomesApprove and continue, hold for review, or decline before any charge is attempted.
- Signals from the deviceA device check runs on checkout and on enrollment pages, so sign-ups are screened too.
- No hints for fraudstersA declined shopper sees a plain message to try another payment method or call their bank, never the score.
- Checkout keeps movingIf the screening service can’t answer, orders go through rather than stall.
At checkout
What happens in the second before a charge.
Every order takes the same path, whether it came from your store or a rep’s link.
- CartThe order is checkedItems, prices, and the shopper’s details are validated.
- ScreenThe order is screenedFluid Payments checks the device, email, and history for a decision.
- DecisionPay, hold, or stopApproved orders are charged. Held ones wait for review. Declined ones never reach the card.
- AfterScreening learns the outcomeCard checks, shipments, and refunds are fed back.
Review
Hold uncertain orders for a person to decide.
Held orders wait in their own tab. Nothing ships or refunds until someone approves or cancels, and the decision stays on the order.
- A queue, not a pileThe Pending Review tab in Orders shows every order held for review.
- Held means heldA held order can’t be refunded, completed, archived, or marked shipped until it’s decided.
- Two clear choicesApprove the order, or cancel it and refund the customer, with an optional reason saved.
- Decisions that stickThe approval or cancellation, and any reason, stays on the order for the next person.
Evidence
The evidence sits on the order itself.
Reviewers see the device, email, velocity, and policy signals behind each hold without leaving the order. Every outcome is fed back into screening, so the next decision has more to go on.
- Linked identities and velocityThe cards, devices, and emails tied to the buyer, bank-declined orders, and how fast they came in.
- Device and emailBrowser, operating system, location, and IP, plus whether the email domain is verified and when it was first seen.
- Which policy firedThe rule set, the segment, and each policy’s outcome, as screening recorded them.
- Outcomes go backCard checks, declines, shipments, and refunds are fed back into screening after the fact.
Authentication
3-D Secure where your markets need it.
Turn on 3-D Secure country by country, so the cardholder’s bank confirms card payments in the markets you choose.
- A switch per countryRequire 3-D Secure for card payments in one country and leave it off in another.
- Runs through Fluid PaymentsSet up for Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover card payments.
- Card data kept off your serversCard numbers are tokenized into a secure vault before they reach you.
- Lighter card checksWhere the gateway supports it, a new card is verified with a $0 check instead of a $1 authorization.
Good customers
Real customers get clear answers and one charge.
Protection shouldn’t punish the people who are really buying, or the reps who brought them in. Fluid tells declined shoppers what to do next and won’t charge anyone twice.
- Plain decline messagesProcessor codes become clear next steps, like calling the bank or checking the card details.
- No double chargesCheckout won’t charge a shopper who already has an unfinished payment from the past week.
- Dead cards left aloneRenewals never retry a card that’s lost, stolen, closed, or invalid.
- Stop means stopA cardholder who revokes recurring charges isn’t charged again.
What it replaces
Screening and review, inside the checkout.
Fraud work usually happens in a separate screening tool, a review spreadsheet, and a lot of tabs. In Fluid, the screen runs inside checkout and the review happens on the order.
Usually
- A separate screening integration
- Transaction review queues
- Spreadsheets of held orders
- Manual fraud investigations
- Screening at checkout
- A Pending Review queue
- Evidence on every held order
- 3-D Secure by country
- Vaulted card data
- Plain decline messages
FAQs
Questions risk teams ask.
Your markets, processors, and order patterns shape the setup. We’ll work through it with you.
Who scores the orders?
Fluid Payments does. Every checkout is screened before the card is charged, and we set up screening with you.
Can we write our own fraud rules in Fluid?
Not in the admin. Screening rules are set up with you by the Fluid Payments team, and Fluid shows which rule set, segment, and policy fired on each held order, so your reviewers can see why it was held.
What happens to an order that’s held?
It waits in the Pending Review tab. It can’t ship, complete, or be refunded until someone approves it or cancels it, and cancelling refunds the customer.
What does a declined shopper see?
A plain message asking them to try another payment method or contact their bank. The score and the reason are never shown to the shopper.
Where do we turn on 3-D Secure?
Country by country, in your country settings. It runs through Fluid Payments, and we’ll confirm it for your markets during setup.
Can Mist help review held orders?
Ask Mist what’s behind a held order. It reads the same screening evidence your team sees, and approving or cancelling still waits for a person.
